WTA Supports Bipartisan Reintroduction of the Broadband Grant Tax Treatment Act

WASHINGTON, D.C. (March 6, 2025) – WTA – Advocates for Rural Broadband strongly supports the reintroduction of the bipartisan Broadband Grant Tax Treatment Act (H.R. 1873) by Representatives Mike Kelly (R-PA) and Jimmy Panetta (D-CA), which exempts recent federal broadband investment from taxation. Identical legislation was introduced in the Senate on February 20th by Senators Jerry Moran (R-KS), Mark Warner (D-VA) and ten of their colleagues.

“Congress has made an historic level of investment in broadband over the past several years and we want to see it pay dividends. Every dollar diverted to paying taxes on government grants is a dollar that is not invested in the network and connecting all Americans to broadband,” said Derrick B. Owens, WTA’s Senior Vice President for Government and Industry Affairs. “We applaud the Members of Congress for reintroducing the bipartisan Broadband Grant Tax Treatment Act, which would streamline the tax code so that every broadband grant dollar goes toward building broadband networks and extending service to those who don’t have it. With Congress working on a larger tax bill this year, we strongly urge Congressional leadership to address this issue.”
